Working remotely has become the new buzzword. Seven out of 10 of my clients tell me they want a job where they can work from home (especially those mommies who are returning to the workforce!). Whether it’s completely remote or even just one day a week, everyone wants flexibility with their work schedule. Sounds like the dream life, right?
But then the question quickly becomes - how do you FIND those types of jobs?
Well, I teamed up with my friend and old colleague over at Remote.com to learn a bit more about their platform. Formally, Remote.com is the largest network of remote professionals. 2 million, in fact. That's a lot of like-minded people to connect with! Originally the site was designed for freelancers, but they've been positioning themselves toward the full-time workforce!
To me, Remote.com is like if FlexJobs and LinkedIn got married and had a baby. As a user, you can create a profile that helps you network with other professionals (ie: LinkedIn). Plus, all of their jobs also have some level of remote-friendly work associated with them (ie: FlexJobs). What sets Remote.com apart is that they have this really cool machine learning and AI technology. That means that the the more active you are on the site, the more the site "gets to know you" and helps send jobs your way. Not mad about that, eh?
Here are my thoughts on the site:
You need to create a robust profile.
Make sure your profile matches up with your LinkedIn. Soon, they will have a feature where you can sync your LI to your Remote profile. This means you better have a top notch LinkedIn profile that parses out all of your skills. The skills is what helps match you with jobs. If you don't have a robust profile, the site won't be as effective for you.
I love their job descriptions.
For companies that are hiring full-time, you can see how much of their workforce is remote, details about what apps they use to stay connected and what time zone they want you to be in. It's a remote-worker's dream!
They have great content.
I've read quite a few of their articles and they are excellent. Not only are they enjoyable to read from a remote-worker's perspective, you can see how recruiters think with their employer-centric content. Getting inside the head of a recruiter? Sign me up.
There is a con.
Because the platform started out as a freelancer-centric site, you have to pay to apply to a job ($19/month). However! This payment WILL change soon. In the meantime, recruiters from companies, Remote's matching technology and talent team will invite you to jobs you're a match with and you can apply to those for free. If you create a complete profile, all you have to do is sit back and let the job matches come to your inbox!
