Alright, so yesterday you took a bird's eye view of 2017.
And today, as you are slipping back in the rhythm of "real life" I want you to plan out your 2018!
What do you want 2018 to look like for your career? At the end of this year as you take stock of 2018, what do you want to have accomplished? Who do you want to have impacted? What kinds of things would you be proud of? I want you to get out a blank piece of paper and just start brainstorming ideas. What are some things that would make your heart sing every day on your way to work?
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Help create a more engaged office culture (ie: plan group events, volunteering, workout buddies)
Get to know your colleagues better
Pitch a project to your boss - and get the opportunity to lead it
Mentor younger employees
Participate in the hiring process
Negotiate your salary and get a raise
Learn a new skill that's going to help you move upwards and deeper into your specialty
Take on a project with a new department to learn a new skill
Get a better rhythm of work-life balance
Create a system to more efficiently do your job
Network with 3 specific people
Get a mentor
See, not all career goals have to be to make more money or get a promotion. And yes, we often over the course of careers want to see that progression, but we need to expand how we view and value work and success.
Because it could be bigger and better than what we think.
The other thing is we need to constantly be giving ourselves something to work towards. Think about it - when you were in elementary school, you were working towards middle school and then from middle school you ventured into high school which was preparing you for college. Many of us, once we get out of college, feel like a bunch of chickens with our heads cut off because the plan is no longer laid out for us. We have to create it. And as you know, when you don't have a plan, when you don't challenge yourself - you get discontent and you get frustrated. Plus, complacency is the worst thing in a job - it's demotivating, disengaging and promotes lackluster productivity. (Employers HATE this. Don't be this person.) The worst thing you can do for yourself is to get lazy or content in your job. The best thing you can do for your career is to continually stretch and outline actionable goals.
So from this list you brainstormed, I want you to prioritize the top four. Why four? Well, four is manageable. Four is enough to keep you busy, but not too much that you've got no focus. Four allows you to assign one goal to each quarter of the year. That way, you can distribute them out over the course of the year, working towards the harder ones throughout the year.
Take Action Now: I want you to use this fun worksheet, here. Print this out, write down your goals and put it next to your desk. I want you to see this paper every day. The problem with goals is that if they aren't staring us in the face every day, we get forgetful.
So put it in front of your face.
Make sure you don't let yourself forget what's important to you. Life gets crazy, I get it. But we need to constantly be reminding ourselves of what we're working towards. Because if we're not working towards something - what's the point?!
So friend, today I want you to get after it. You got this.
